Especially since they were mostly on people's houses in the town I was in. Reminds me of this one Mormon I had a class with in college. He said that when he was in China on a mission, people would be like, "Yeah, go ahead and give us the Jesus statue, we'll put it up next to all our other ones just so we have our bases covered." It's kind of a fascinating topic. I didnt mention this explicitly in the post, but you could say that the signs are a legacy of the US occupation since this Broman guy behind them first came to Japan in 1950 as a US soldier.
