Murakami’s new advice column/blog is online: http://www.welluneednt.com/
The site is titled 村上さんのところ (Murakami-san’s place)—pretty standard—but the domain name is curious. I was disappointed that I didn’t recognize it from the jazz standard “Well, You Needn’t,” a 1944 Thelonious Monk composition.
In my defense, I haven’t been listening to as much Monk lately (mostly “Thelonious Monk Plays Duke Ellington,” which may be the greatest album of all time), but I think the real culprit is the iPod-ification of all music. When I only carried 5-10 CDs in my car in rural Japan in 2005, I could’ve told you all the track names for “Thelonious Alone in San Francisco,” “Thelonious Himself” and “Solo Monk,” but alas, no longer. First I had an iPod classic with hundreds of albums, dozens from Monk, and now I have an iPhone that can stream just about anything (as long as I have wifi).
But back to the main point of this post: Murakami’s new column/blog. It’s nice. The design is simple and straightforward. The illustrations are well done. It’s easy to see the questions that Murakami has answered and to ask your own question. So far it’s very similar to some of the Murakami Asahido material and other public projects Murakami did (way before blogs were even a thing).
One of the most interesting things about the page is the “Categories” for the types of questions you can ask. Here is the list with my translation following:

Very interesting. It seems like Murakami is looking for a pretty wide range of material. Questions and consultations, sure, but also just some randomness from his readers, things he can kind of bounce his thoughts off of and produce funny/quirky/interesting/readable material.
Obviously you sign away all rights when you ask a question. This stuff is going into a book in the not too distant future. You can ask questions until the end of January, and the site will be online until the end of March.
He’s going through questions at a pretty intense pace: He responded to six different inquiries on a Sunday (1/18)! I read through all of the entries through 1/17 and did some quicky translations on Twitter of interesting posts. Here are the results:

Un difetto: finiscono, come tutti noi.

My name is Nikolay Tsonev. I am a Bulgarian lawyer and a writer. I was born in 1981. I am from Republic of Bulgaria, town of Plovdiv. I have a twin brother – Angel Tsonev, who is also a lawyer. We have a cat called Masha who is now 14 years old.
We read your books and are fans of your work. We were particularly impressed by your novel Kafka on the Shore. It is a complicated narrative about the struggle between the forces of good and evil in the souls of human beings.

What is your explanation for the existence of evil in the Universe? How is it possible that the good God allows the existence of evil in the Universe? Can’t God create a world that would be perfect? What is the point of the eternal struggle between Good and Evil?
Nikolay Tsonev:
I was impressed the most by the idea which one of the characters expresses in your novel – that everybody is mortal and this constitutes the evil in the Universe – everybody is doomed and cannot defeat suffering and death, and their own moral failings.
Your novel is mystical and full of mystery. It searches for solution of the problem of good and evil in the universe and the confusion in the souls of young people nowadays. Your novel reflects the rhythm and spirit of the 21st century really well.

How can I become a member of your website? Will we be able to repeatedly write letters to each other and converse over the Internet?
Nikolay Tsonev:
In 2011 I published in Bulgaria my first book called Philosophy – a Strive towards Wisdom.
I would like to ask you this – how can a Bulgarian writer publish his books, written in Bulgarian, in Japan?
Would my books be received well in Japan?
Which publishing houses could I turn to for the publishing of my books in Japan?
Which Japanese translators would be able to translate my books in such a way that their meaning would reach the hearts of the Japanese readers?
Would there be readers in Japan for Bulgarian books translated from Bulgarian into Japanese or English? Or, on the contrary, nobody would pay any attention to my book?

Казвам се Николай Цонев. Български адвокат и писател съм. Роден съм през 1981 г. Аз съм от Република България, град Плодив. Имам брат-близнак Ангел Цонев, който е адвокат като мен. Най-много ми прави впечатление идеята, която един герой изказва във вашия роман, че всички са смъртни и в това се състои злото във Вселената- всеки е обречен и не може да победи страданието и смъртта и собствените си нравствени недостатъци.
Романът ви е мистичен и загадъчен.Той търси загадката на проблема за доброто и злото във Вселената и объркаността в душата на младите хора в съвременността.Романът ви много добре отразява ритъма и духа на ХХІ век.
